Quick answer: Go to srd.sassa.gov.za, open the status page, and enter your 13-digit South African ID number plus the cellphone number you applied with. Tap Submit. You will see one result per month (Approved, Pending or Declined), the reason for any decline, and your pay day once the month is approved. No data? Use WhatsApp on 082 601 0111 or call the toll-free line on 0800 60 10 11.
Every month, SASSA performs a fresh means test on each person who receives the Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress payment of R370. Being approved in one month does not guarantee money in the next, so the only reliable way to know where you stand is to check. The grant is run by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), and this guide sticks to what you actually need: the fastest official ways to check, what each result means, the pay days still to come, and what to do if a month is declined.
Good news first: SASSA is still paying the R370. The South African government extended it for another year in the 2026 Budget, when the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, set aside R36.4 billion to keep the SRD R370 grant running until 31 March 2027. The amount did not change, and existing beneficiaries do not need to reapply.
What a Status Check Shows You
Your result on the official SASSA portal is broken down month by month. For each month you get an outcome, a reason when the outcome is negative, and, after approval, the day your money will be released. At the top of the result you also see your application ID and the payment method on record, which tells you whether your money goes to a bank account or a cash send at a retailer.
Because eligibility is re-tested every month, make checking a habit in the second half of each month. A Declined result for one month does not cancel your application. You can still be approved the following month, and you can appeal the month that was declined.
What You Need Before You Check
- Your ID number. Use the same one you entered on your SRD grant application. Refugees, permanent residents and asylum seeker permit holders use the document number they applied with.
- The number linked to your SRD application. This is the phone that receives SMS one-time PINs (OTPs). If you no longer have that SIM, update it first (see the section on keeping your details current).
- A data connection or WhatsApp. The portal needs a browser; the WhatsApp line uses very little data. The helpline needs neither.
How to Check Your SASSA SRD Status Online (Step by Step)
- Open the SASSA SRD website. Type srd.sassa.gov.za into your browser yourself instead of tapping links shared in WhatsApp or Facebook groups.
- Go to the status form. Choose the option to check the status. It opens the form at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status.
- Enter your details. Type your 13-digit ID and the 10-digit mobile number you registered with, with no spaces. Both must match the agency’s records exactly.
- Submit and wait. During the pay run in the last ten days of the month, the site can be slow or show a “too many requests” error. Wait a few minutes rather than refreshing again and again.
- Read each month’s panel. An Approved month shows your exact payment date once the pay run for that month has been released.
Tip: The SRD portal, the WhatsApp line and the helpline all read from the same database. If your result has not changed on one channel, it has not changed on the others, so there is no need to try all three on the same day.
Other Official Ways to Check Your SRD Status
WhatsApp self-service: 082 601 0111
SASSA launched this WhatsApp line in May and it is now the easiest option if you are short on data. Save the number, send “Hi”, choose the SRD option and confirm your cellphone number. An OTP arrives by SMS (not inside WhatsApp); type it into the chat, then add your ID. Choose Payment Status to see the outcome for a specific month, or the pay date option to see when your money is due. Never forward that OTP to anyone.
Toll-free helpline: 0800 60 10 11
Call from any phone on weekdays during office hours. Follow the voice menu for SRD and choose the option to speak to an agent if you want a decline reason explained or need a payment trace. Hold times are longest during the monthly pay run, so weekday mornings earlier in the month are usually quicker.
At a local office
Visit a SASSA office in person when the phone number on your file no longer works, your ID has been lost, or identity verification keeps failing. Take your ID, a copy of it, and your new SIM. Staff can update your record, which the online channels cannot do without access to your old number.
USSD codes
The published USSD codes (*134*7737# and *120*69277#) have been widely reported as returning a “service code not supported” error on major networks this year. If that happens to you, switch to WhatsApp or the helpline. Never pay anyone who claims they can “unlock” the USSD service for you.
SRD Pay Days: SASSA Payment Dates Table
SRD money is not paid on a fixed day. A new pay run is announced each month, usually in the final week, once the monthly checks against SARS, UIF and bank records are done. Your personal date appears on your result after your month is approved. Here are the recent SRD runs and the months still to come before the grant’s current end date.
SRD R370 pay runs for the current financial year
| Month | SRD payout window | Notes |
| July | 23 – 24 July | Paid |
| August | 24 – 26 August | Paid. National Women’s Day fell on Sunday, 9 August 2026 (observed Monday 10 August), so the SRD run was not affected. |
| September | 23 and 25 September | Paid. No batch on 24 September because of Heritage Day. |
| October | Announced in the week before payouts | Upcoming |
| November | Announced in the week before payouts | Upcoming |
| December | Announced in the week before payouts | Upcoming; expect an earlier run ahead of the holidays |
| January – March | Announced monthly | March is the last funded month under the current extension |
SRD money is released in batches, so one person may be paid on the first day of the payment window and another a day or two later. If nothing has reflected 48 hours after the last day of the run, recheck your result before phoning the helpline. Bank deposits can take one to three working days to show.
Pay days for other grants in your household
Permanent grants are paid at the start of each month on a separate payment dates schedule approved by National Treasury: older persons first, then disability, then children’s grants. These dates do not apply to the R370.
Older Persons, Disability and Children’s grant pay days, October to March
| Month | Older Persons | Disability | Children’s grants |
| October | Fri 2 Oct | Mon 5 Oct | Tue 6 Oct |
| November | Tue 3 Nov | Wed 4 Nov | Thu 5 Nov |
| December | Wed 2 Dec | Thu 3 Dec | Fri 4 Dec |
| January | Tue 5 Jan | Wed 6 Jan | Thu 7 Jan |
| February | Tue 2 Feb | Wed 3 Feb | Thu 4 Feb |
| March | Tue 2 Mar | Wed 3 Mar | Thu 4 Mar |
Money stays in the account until you withdraw it, so there is no need to queue at an ATM or till point on the first morning.
What Each Result Means and What to Do
SRD outcomes explained
| Result | What it means | What to do |
| Pending | The month’s checks are not finished yet, or your application is new. | Wait and check again after the 20th. Do not reapply; that restarts the process. |
| Approved | You passed the month’s checks. | Look for your pay day and make sure your banking details are current. |
| Approved, no pay day yet | The month is approved but the pay run has not been released. | Wait for the monthly announcement, then check again. |
| Declined | You failed at least one check for that month. The reason is shown. | If the reason is wrong, appeal within 30 days. |
| Bank details pending | The account could not be verified or is not in your name. | Update your banking information through the portal. |
| Identity verification | Your details did not match Home Affairs or fraud was suspected. | Complete the verification link sent by SMS within 72 hours, or visit an office. |
| Referred | Your file needs a manual review. | Wait. If it stays this way for several weeks, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. |
| Canceled | The application was cancelled by you or by the agency. | Submit a new application; this is the only case where reapplying makes sense. |
Common Reasons a Month Gets Declined
If your application was declined, the reason is printed next to that month. These are the ones that come up most often:
- Alternative income source identified. More than R624 reached your bank account that month, or income is on record for you elsewhere. Deposits count, not just a salary, so regular transfers from family can trigger this.
- Existing grant. You are already the main beneficiary of another social grant. Collecting a child’s grant as a caregiver does not disqualify you, but this is sometimes flagged in error and worth appealing.
- UIF registered. The Unemployment Insurance Fund has you on record as employed or receiving benefits.
- NSFAS or government payroll. You are on the student funding or government salary system.
- Identity or age mismatch. Your details did not match Home Affairs, or you are outside the 18 to 59 age range.
How to Appeal a Declined Month
You have the right to appeal the SASSA decision for every month that was declined. Declines are not reconsidered automatically, so if the reason is wrong you need to submit an appeal yourself. The appeal process is free and done entirely online.
- Open the appeals page at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals and enter your ID and the cellphone number you applied with. Confirm with the OTP.
- Choose the month you are disputing. The system covers applicants declined for any period from April 2022, when the current SRD regulations took effect, but lodge within 30 days of each decision to be safe.
- Give your reason and attach proof if you have it, such as a bank statement showing that a deposit was a once-off loan or a transfer between your own accounts.
- Submit and track the outcome on the same appeals page. Outcomes usually take 60 to 90 days.
An SRD appeal is decided by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), set up under the Social Assistance Act, rather than by the office that declined you. You lodge the appeal with the Department of Social Development through the online form, so there is no queue. If the tribunal rules in your favour, you are paid for the months in question.

Keep Your Details Up to Date
Many “approved but not paid” problems come from outdated details rather than from the agency’s decision. Your SASSA profile holds your phone number, payment method and banking information, and each one has to be correct for the money to arrive.
Changing your phone number
Use the official SASSA SRD site’s option to update your phone details. An SMS link goes to the number linked to your application, so this only works while you still have the old SIM. If you have lost it, visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and the new SIM.
Updating bank details
Choose the banking option on the portal, enter an account held in your own name, and confirm with an OTP. The change usually takes one pay cycle to reflect, and payments into someone else’s account are rejected. Update any changes within a few days to keep an active SRD file.
Who Qualifies for the SRD Grant in 2026
The Social Relief of Distress grant is meant for adults with no other means of support. You must:
- Be aged 18 to 59.
- Be one of the South African citizens, permanent residents, refugees or special permit holders registered with Home Affairs.
- Have less than R624 coming into your accounts in the month being tested.
- Not receive unemployment insurance benefits, NSFAS funding or another grant in your own name.
- Not live in a state-funded institution.
- Hold a valid South African ID document or permit and a phone number registered in your name.
The R370 is separate from permanent SASSA grants such as the Older Persons Grant, so the grant status of one has no effect on the other.
Stay Safe From SRD Scams
- Use the SASSA channels only: srd.sassa.gov.za, WhatsApp 082 601 0111 and 0800 60 10 11.
- Checking, appealing and updating are free. Anyone asking for an “admin fee” or “reactivation fee” is a scammer.
- Never share your OTP, bank PIN or card with anyone, including people who say they work for the agency.
- Family members who help an older relative check their SASSA result should only do so with that person’s consent.
- Ignore “fixer” groups that promise to speed up approval. Nobody can move your file up the queue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check my SRD R370 status with only my ID number?
No. Every official channel asks for both your ID and the phone number on your file. This stops other people from viewing your details.
Is the SASSA SRD status check free?
Yes. The portal, the WhatsApp line and the toll-free helpline cost nothing to use. The only cost is a small amount of data.
How often should I check your status?
Once a month is enough, ideally after the 20th, when most results for that month have been processed. Checking several times a day will not speed anything up.
My month says Approved but no money arrived. Why?
Approved means your SRD payment is scheduled, not yet sent. Wait until 48 hours after the last day of that month’s run. If it still has not arrived, confirm your bank details, then call the helpline and ask for a payment trace.
How do I follow my appeal?
Go back to the appeals page and log in with the same ID and phone number. The status of your SRD grant appeal will change from pending to approved or declined once the tribunal has ruled.
Will the R370 continue after March?
It is funded until the end of March under the current extension. Government has said it is working on a longer-term replacement, but nothing has been finalised. Keep watching official announcements and check your SASSA status each month until then.
